Background
What is RDAP?
RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) is the standard way to look up a domain’s registrar, status, key dates, and nameservers. It replaces WHOIS with structured JSON over HTTPS and is now the lookup service registries maintain. Personal contact details are often redacted for privacy.
How to read the result
RDAP returns structured registration data over HTTPS and is replacing WHOIS. What each registry publishes varies, and personal details are often redacted.
Read status codes and dates together when you are investigating a transfer, a renewal, or a nameserver change.

Reference

Troubleshooting
Common problems and how to fix them
- No result
- Check the domain name and extension. Some registries do not offer RDAP yet or limit the data they return.
- Contact details are redacted
- Registries hide personal data for privacy. Use the registrar’s contact or disclosure process if you have a legitimate need.
- Unexpected nameservers
- Check the nameserver settings in the registrar account and confirm whether a DNS migration finished.
- Transfer lock present
- A
clientTransferProhibitedstatus blocks transfers. Remove the lock at the registrar before you start a transfer.
Example
Registrar: Example Registrar, Inc.
Status: clientTransferProhibited
Expires: 2027-06-14
Nameservers: ns1.provider.example, ns2.provider.example
DNSSEC: Signed
FAQ
Questions about WHOIS and RDAP
- What is RDAP?
- The Registration Data Access Protocol returns domain registration data as structured JSON over HTTPS. It is the successor to WHOIS.
- Why is contact information hidden?
- Registries and registrars redact personal data to comply with privacy laws and their own policies.
- Can RDAP show the DNS provider?
- RDAP lists the nameservers, which usually point to the DNS provider. The nameserver checker identifies the provider from them.
- Does RDAP data update immediately?
- It depends on the registrar and registry. Recent changes can take some time to appear.
